Galax fell to Riverheads, 31-24 Saturday from Salem Stadium.

The Maroon Tide struck first Saturday, with a handoff to Galax RB Denver Brown, who found the hole and weaved his way to the end zone for 43 yards and a 7-0 lead.

Fast forward to the second quarter, and its Riverheads' turn. The pitch goes to Zach Smiley, and he has the corner, 15-yard run, and the Gladiators tied things up at 7.

Later in the half, with Galax down 3, QB Cole Pickett lobbed one across his body and into the hands of Smiley for 45 yards on the pick-six, and the Gladiators score 17 unanswered to take a 17-7 lead into the break.

Moving to the third quarter, Riverheads up 3, Smiley again broke through the Maroon Tide front line and took it down the sideline to the house. Gladiators restored their 10-point lead.

Galax stayed in the fight, and Pickett throws across his body to Zach Johnson, who dove in and brought the deficit to three.

In the fourth, Galax had three tries from inside the 1-yard line but could not punch it in. Maroon Tide settled for a field goal to knot things up at 24.

On the very next drive, Riverheads strikes once more, sophomore Cole Burton breaks loose and had the end zone on his mind. Gladiators take the Class 1 Final 31-24 over Galax, the fourth straight state title for Riverheads.
