RADFORD, Va. (WDBJ7) A former Radford University teacher and basketball coach has passed away at the age of 83.

Patricia Ingham Barrett died Thursday, November 28. RU shared the information in a letter sent to faculty.

The letter tells how Barrett began her employment with the university in 1968, and stayed there until her retirement 30 years later in 1998.

After graduating Lynchburg College, Barrett taught physical education, health, history and government to students at the New London Academy, before later joining the teaching staff at RU.

According to the letter, Barrett was the first coach for the women's basketball team in the modern era. She held this role from 1971 to 1994, and remained a faithful supporter of the athletics department afterward. She was inducted into the Radford Athletics Hall of Fame in 1996.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations are made to Gideons International or Mike Wingfield Ministries in her memory.
