SALEM, Va. (WDBJ7) -- In the City of Champions, Don Holter tried to improve to 2 and 0 as Salem's head coach against former Spartans assistant JR Edwards and Franklin County.
The Spartans hadn't lost to the Eagles since the 2011 season.
But early on, Franklin County moved the ball and gave it to Jayron Smith who scooted in on an 11-yard touchdown. The Eagles were flying high, on top 7-0 early.
Salem answered. Following a fake punt, Zayvione Wood broke off the 20-yard gallop to the zone and tied it up at 7.
On the next Spartans drive, Isaiah Persinger got the pitch. Running around the right edge, he got lots of daylight. Persinger shook a couple of tackles and they didn't get him until he took off 62 big yards down inside the Franklin County 30.
That led to Hunter Chaney finding Bobby Pinello who puts on a move and took it in for a 14-7 Salem advantage. The Spartans hang on late to win it 27 to 21.
