SPOTLIGHT GAME OF THE WEEK: George Wythe at Narrows
George Wythe and Narrows first met on a football field more than 100 years ago but these teams haven't faced each other since back in 1998. What a time to renew a rivalry with a spot in the regional finals on the line here tonight in our spotlight game the week.
Nothing like a little postseason trash talk. No shortage of highlights, so let's get right to it.
Narrows up 7-0 but George Wythe has an early response. Jude Reigelsperger breaks past the secondary and he takes it to the house. Maroons tie things up at 7-7 in the first quarter.
Green Wave back on the attack, and QB Chase Blaker throws over the middle and has Dustin Wiley for a big gain. Nobody there to stop him. Narrows back in front 14-7.
But the good times didn't stop there for the Green Wave. Wythe QB Cole Simmons back to throw, but it ends up right in the hands of Chase Blaker who makes a nice return deep inside Maroons territory.
That would set up Narrows for another prime scoring chance, and on the pitch from Chase to his brother Chad, the Blaker boys put the Green Wave go up 21-7 in the first quarter. But, that's where this game turned.
George Wythe, not going down easily, handoff is to Ravvon Wells who has the corner and gets in for the Maroons TD. That made it a 7-point game.
And then later in the 2Q, the handoff is to Dayson McMillian who punches it in to tie it up.
So now the Green Wave's lead has been erased. Blaker looking to get it right back on a big play opportunity, but that's Wells on the George Wythe interception.
And he promptly punches on in on the ensuing drive to give the Maroons a 28-21 halftime lead.
A lead that would only grow as this game went on, as Wells plants the dagger on his third rushing touchdown of the night.
George Wythe comes in to Narrows and ends the Green Wave's quest for perfection with a 56-28 win to advance to the regional final.
