AMHERST, VA (WDBJ7) -- At the end of last season, not many people could have predicted that when Salem and Amherst County hooked up in the season opener, that Don Holter would be leading the Spartans and Bob Christmas would be manning the Lancers sideline.
But that was exactly the situation after Stephen Magenbauer abruptly resigned and Christmas made the move from Jefferson Forest to Amherst.
The Lancers were primed to make it a solid debut for Christmas.
But Salem struck first. The Spartans cap the first drive of the season with eight yard touchdown run up the gut from Isaiah Persinger.
Next possesion Amherst moves the ball down field only to have Salem's Chase Greer pick it off in the endzone.
The very next play, Persinger takes it right up the middle and he's off the races untouched for a 75 yard touchdown to make it 14 to 0 Salem.
But D'Angelo Brown answers right back for Amherst, taking the kick off return to the house.
Next Drive, Zavione Woods taking his turn and puts a few moves on the defense for a long touchdown run, and Salem was rolling.
Before the half Hunter Chaney hits Jayden McDonald and McDonald does the rest for the score and the Spartan go up 27 to 6
Salem starts the season 1-0 with the 48 to 20 win.
