SAN JOSE, Calif. (WDBJ7) -- Dale Layer is a former head coach at Liberty, having taken the Flames to the Big Dance previously. Now, he will face the Flames in his current role as an assistant coach with Virginia Tech.
Layer is a former assistant to current Liberty boss Ritchie McCay, a man he considers a "dear friend." So Layer was hopeful heading into the weekend, that both the Hokies and Flames would be successful in tournament play.
He'll get his wish, as Liberty pulled off an 80-76 upset of Mississippi State on Friday night, and Layer's Hokies followed that by handling Saint Louis in the nightcap. That means No. 12 seed Liberty and No. 4 Va. Tech will square off in the Round of 32.
Layer may have been the head coach at Liberty in his last tournament appearance, but he's enjoying his role with the Hokies.
"(Virginia Tech was) doing great without me," Layer said, "so it's not like I'm adding a lot, but maybe a couple of things here and there that I've been able to help with. It's great to be a part of it."
