Some dogs need help getting proper spaces, something that becomes more important in July, when new laws about having tethered dogs outside in hot and cold weather come into effect.
Normally around this time of year, the Virginia Horse Center would have seen a number of horse shows already, but in the time of COVID, all that has been canceled.
The center is closed to the public, but the pet pantry will be open every Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m. and is open to all Pittsylvania County and Danville residents.
The center has to euthanize when it gets too full. The last time it had to euthanize was eighteen months ago due to space issues, and that is something they don't want to have to do anytime again soon.
The center plans to continue its mission of reuniting animals with their families processing adoptions and finding temporary homes for animals with special care needs.
Instead of bringing all the participants and their dogs together for the race on March 21st, the shelter is encouraging people and their pups run the 3-point-1 miles on their own so they do not have to race in large crowds.
Members of the community will be able to take a dog out for an adventure, whether it be exploring downtown Roanoke, hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains or just spending a few hours with a furry companion.
