People are always looking for a bargain, but there are a few things it doesn’t pay to skimp on. Dental work, a lawyer, and your roof. When it’s time to replace or repair your roof, you’ll find plenty of companies trying to give you a deal. There are a few things to look for in a roofer to help make sure you won’t get burned. There are also some shortcuts to watch for that can be the difference between a quality roof, and a roofing disaster.

Here are a few common shortcuts shady roofers use:

  • Installing new shingles over the old roof: This is not exactly a roof replacement, but a roof layover. This method of installation is exactly that: your contractors will just lay new shingles over the old ones. They’ll claim this is easier and more cost-effective to do, but a roof layover can lead to a number of problems later on in your roof’s lifespan. For one thing, you won’t find out whether crucial (but not visible) components like the roof deck actually have issues that need to be repaired before a new roof can be installed. Not only that, the additional weight of the new shingle layer might put unnecessary strain on the roof structure, causing the system to sag. There’s also the issue of roof ventilation. A roof layover allows excess moisture to build up in the attic, encouraging mold and rot in the space. What you should do instead is invest in a complete roof tear-off.
  • Not using the right number of nails: Asphalt shingles need the right number of nails so they can adhere properly to the roof. Some shady contractors skimp on the nails when they install a roof, making the shingles more susceptible to blow-offs, which in turn, leave the roof vulnerable to water infiltration. Also make sure your roofer isn’t using staples in place of mails to save cost.
  • Failing to install the ice and water shields properly: Ice and water shields or roof flashing protect the more leak-prone spots of your roof. These may include the area around chimneys, dormers, vent pipes, valleys and skylights. When these are not installed or sealed properly, serious roof leaks become more likely.

Even more importantly, what should you look for in a quality roofing company? Don’t get tricked by flashy Billboards with cheap offers. Just like mom said, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Here are a few tips to help find a reputable roofing company:

  • Insurance is a must: Make sure that your contractor has worker’s compensation and liability insurance. Ask to see the certificates and actually call the insurance carrier to confirm that they are valid. This keeps all bids on a level playing field, knowing that part of the cost of the roof and the service being provided to you is protected with the security of coverage.
  • Choose a local contractor: It should go without saying, but make sure and use a local company. Particularly after a big storm, fly-by-night companies will drive through town, grab as many jobs as they can, use all the shortcuts on your roof, and leave before the next storm blows through. The work can be poor, the product is often low quality and they probably won’t answer the phone once the check has cleared.
  • Get job details in writing: You should be in control. We suggest that you don’t give funds until the work is complete. Make sure that you are satisfied with the result and that the terms of payment were discussed prior to the job and adhered to by both parties. Make sure that you ask how long a job will take.

Most towns have several roofing companies that carry a decent reputation. Checking with your local chamber of commerce or BBB will quickly let you know who has a good reputation and good standing in the community. Look for a roofing company that carries extra certifications and has provided extra training to their staff. Your roof is one of the most essential pieces of your home and you want to take a few extra minutes to make sure you’re using the roofing company you can to protect your home.
