The Endoscopy Center of Southwest Virginia and Gastroeneterology Consultants of Southwest Virginia offer patient care and research for the treatment of a wide array of medical conditions.

Dr. Vishal Bhagat, MBBS, MD, FACG, is one of our specialists who serves as the Director of Clinical Research and Investigator for clinical trials in Fatty Liver Disease.

Dr. Bhagat completed his medical education at Gujarat University, India, in 2000. This is where he also had his first Internal Medicine (IM) residency. Dr. Bhagat also was an IM resident at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo in 2005. There, he also served an additional year as Chief Resident in Medicine.

In 2007, Dr. Bhagat completed a Fellowship in Liver Diseases at the University of Miami, before returning to SUNY Buffalo for his Fellowship in Gastroenterology, which he completed in 2010. In October that year, he joined Gastroenterology Consultants of Southwest Virginia.

Presently, Dr. Bhagat runs clinical trials on treatments for fatty liver disease. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) says fatty liver disease is a condition in which fat builds up in your liver. Usually, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a silent disease with few or no symptoms. Certain health conditions and diseases—including obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes—make you more likely to develop NAFLD. Fatty liver disease is the most common cause of cirrhosis and liver transplantation in the USA.
