ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - Hip Hop Santa is once again bringing Christmas straight to the community.

Melvin Ward, known as Hip Hop Santa, has been spreading joy for more than 20 years, marking his 10th year giving back in Roanoke. What began as visits to the NICU has grown into a citywide effort focused on bringing smiles, laughter, and holiday cheer to those who need it most.

This year, community members and volunteers partnered with multiple organizations to support families and individuals across the region. Donations included clothes, snack bags, toys, and bicycles, all handed out to the homeless and anyone in need.

One of the partners this year was The Dream Team, a nonprofit that focuses on disaster relief and supporting families and people experiencing homelessness. The organization helped collect and give away 100 bikes during the event.

Ward says the success of the effort comes down to community support. He says the idea may start with him, but it’s the people who step up year after year who make it possible.

Organizers say the goal is to provide resources, spread joy, and make the holiday season a little brighter for the community.
