Car maintenance website ranks Virginia 13th highest in car repair cost

If you think repairing your car engine was expensive, a new study says you're not crazy.

According to CarMD.com, Virginia is one of the most expensive states to have a car repaired, especially if it's to repair the engine after the Check Engine Light comes on.

The national average for an engine repair last year was $333.

In Virginia the cost was $14 more making it the 13th highest in the nation.

At this car repair shop in Martinsville, Check Engine Light repairs are more common when it's hot.

And for many in that area, car repairs are hard to budget.

"Because there's no jobs around here and most people are retired and low income. That's the way I see it. If I was working it wouldn't be so bad, but I'm 77 years old and I'm not able to work," said Barbara Reynolds, a Martinsville resident.

Researchers say the price of parts and labor make up the price.

Wyoming made the top of the list at $389 for the engine repair. Indiana was the cheapest.
