A "much needed break" for director of God's Storehouse in Danville

After putting food on the table for thousands of low income people in Southern Virginia, the director of God's Storehouse in Danville will soon hand out her last.

Becky Wales, the director for 17 years told board members last month she's resigning in March.

"I think change is a good thing, and change can bring in a lot of enthusiasm a lot of new ideas. People have the availability to be able to view things in a different way then you've been looking at them," Wales said.

Wales said she wants to spend more time with her children and grandchildren and simply put, just needs a break from the emotionally stressful job.

"It's very very demanding and can be very emotionally draining too. Hearing people's stories day after day can be very difficult," Wales said.

Most of all she's proud of her accomplishments. Last September the Storehouse moved from its location on Westover Drive to Memorial Drive because of an increase in requests for food.

She says in the last seven years the Storehouse has seen a 98 percent increase in clients, a true testament to the tough economy, Wales said.

Even though the road has been rough, she says the hardest part lies ahead; saying goodbye.

"Some of these volunteers have been here almost as long as I have. When you spend more time with those people than you do often at your home everyday, you develop a real friendship and a real kinship," Wales said, "It's very rewarding to know maybe you've helped someone who just didn't know where to turn."
