ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - The City of Roanoke is having a job fair at the Berglund Center.

“Looking for candidates to come in and just be willing to work. Someone that matches with the department’s cultures and what they’re looking for,” said Christopher Parker, Acting Director of Human Resources.

Attending the fair could be a fast track to getting hired.

“Sit down and interview on the spot and be able to, if they’re the successful candidate, have drug testing and background checks available immediately. If a job requires a driver’s license or CDL that they do not have, we will even have stations available for them to apply for that as well,” said Parker.

The city is looking for all types of positions.

“We’re looking for people with HVAC experience, electrician experience, all the way up to our finance departments for accounting, engineering jobs are available, civil engineers, Parks and Rec-type jobs as well. Salary range is very wide open. So, we start at $15 an hour, you know, for any of our lowest jobs, all the way up to six figures. We have tuition reimbursement opportunities, we have professional growth, we want people to come in, we want them to excel and move up within the city. We have a pension plan and 401 H2,” said Parker.

This fair might be the opportunity you need to jump-start your career.

“I was born and raised here. I went to school up in Richmond, but I knew I always wanted to come back here. But I’ve always been into kind of marketing and sales and things like that. So I know this would be a great position for me. So I get to, you know, do the things I love and do the things I’ve learned, but also do it while trying to grow the city,” said Nariq Bailey, Human Resource Recruiter.

You can speak with hiring managers and different departments directly.

“It’s a lot better than just seeing a resume or application go across the screen, you actually get to, you know, see their personality of who they are and kind of make connection there. And I think that goes a long way,” said Bailey.

The fair is going on at the Berglund Center, Wednesday from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m.
