Hurricane Simon has strengthened to a Category 2 storm and was forecast to approach Mexico’s coast as a major hurricane this weekend, the National Hurricane Center said Friday.

Isaias strengthened into the first hurricane of the Atlantic season late Wednesday as it surged towards the U.S. Gulf Coast, the National Hurricane Center said.

Halifax and Pittsylvania counties, along with parts of Campbell County, are experiencing extreme drought conditions, the highest level in Virginia, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.
“The Halifax County Service Authority has restricted permitted bulk haulers from using any water until the extreme drought condition returns to a less critical condition.”
The Virginia Department of Health is asking members of the public to help with efforts to identify eight unknown victims of Hurricane Camille, which ripped through Virginia in 1969.
