IRONTO, Va. (WDBJ) - You often hear about the dangers of distracted driving, but seeing the reality of it might change your perspective. At least, that’s the hope of Virginia State Police’s current safety initiative.

Thursday and Friday, a totaled black jeep will sit in front of the Ironto Rest stop along I-81 to show drivers what could happen if you drive with a distraction.

“This crash actually was from somebody who was distracted using a cell phone while they were driving. [They] ended up running into the back of a dump truck or a semi trailer,” said VSP Senior Trooper J. Wheat.

Sgt. Rick Garletts with VSP said so far this year there have been 85 fatal car crashes in our hometowns- 33 more than in the previous year.

“This was a lower speed than most of these people running out here,” said Sgt. Garletts, gesturing to the black jeep. “So you see the damage on this vehicle and see what can happen.”

To try and combat these high numbers, VSP is rolling out Operation DISS-rupt. The initiative focuses on distracted driving, impaired driving, speed compliance and seat belt safety.

The goal is to have no fatal crashes for 48 hours, starting Thursday morning, and reduce the number of crashes on local interstates by 10% for the rest of the year.

Troopers will be stationed along all 325 miles of I-81, speaking with people about the key safe driving points, which Sgt. Garletts said are “Pay attention, to wear their seat belt, don’t drive distracted, don’t drink and drive and watch the speed.”
