AGING IN PLACE: “March for Meals” honors the anniversary of Meals on Wheels
In 1972, a national nutrition program for seniors was added to the Older Americans Act
ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - According to the Meals on Wheels website, Meals on Wheels collectively serves 2.8 million seniors each year.
Here locally, Local Office on Aging President & CEO Ron Boyd says the Meals on Wheels program serves around 500 recipients each day.
Volunteers deliver a hot, nutritious lunch Monday through Friday to homebound seniors citizens.
Meals on Wheels is available to homebound seniors, aged 60 and older, who are residents of the LOA’s service area.
According to Meals on Wheels, the senior must be unable to prepare a nutritious mid-day meal, with no one available or willing to prepare the meal for them.
Volunteer drivers are always needed. Routes take one to two hours per day.
The LOA says it offers flexibility. Volunteers can deliver meals once a week, every other week, once a month or once a year.
Drivers choose the route and days they wish to deliver.
