EARLY YEARS: New graduates turning to social media instead of traditional advisors for financial guidance
Consumer Education expert Rod Griffin offers advice to help young people build and boost credit
ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - It’s no secret that young people turn to social media for guidance on everything from fashion to finance.
“They can connect with it and it gives them information they need when they want it,” says Rod Griffin, Director of Consumer Education and Advocacy for Experian.
Social media influencers can have good financial knowledge. But Griffin says to be cautious.
“We just encourage people to make sure that you’re working with people and organizations that you know that are vetted and trustworthy,” says Griffin.
Perhaps the biggest financial milestone for new graduates, getting that first credit card.
“Generally, what I recommend is if you’ve been thinking about establishing credit when you’re 18, 19, 20- you might be in college. Because having that established credit history is going to be important when you get out of school or go into the workforce, potentially in getting a job,” he says.
Griffin say establishing a credit history is also crucial for things like securing an apartment or buying a car.
However, he recommends young people start out with a credit card that has a low limit.
