ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - Keeping kids on a healthy track can start with good nutrition, according to Dr. Dave Hamilton of New River Natural Health.

Dr. Hamilton says protein is crucial because it helps with improving cognition and mental development.

Good sources of protein include lean meats like chicken, turkey and fish-- foods that make for tasty and healthy lunches.

He also suggests students eat plenty of eggs, legumes, nuts, and seeds.

According to Dr. Hamilton, there are important protein guidelines, depending on a child’s age:

-- Ages 2-3 should get 14 grams of protein per day

--Ages 4-8 should get 19 grams of protein per day

--Ages 9-13 should get 34 grams of protein per day.
