NEW ORLEANS, La. (WDBJ) - Virginia Tech and Florida State are no strangers to each other, with some of the most memorable moments in college football.
WDBJ7 looks back at the two teams playing in the Sugar Bowl for the BCS National Championship January 4, 2000.
The #2 ranked Hokies were looking to win their first national championship, while the #1 ranked Seminoles were playing for their second one.
Fans were looking forward to the highly anticipated matchup between Frank Beamer and Bobby Bowden, two of the most accomplished head coaches in college football history.
The stage was also set for the top two quarterbacks: Virginia Tech’s Michael Vick and Florida State’s Chris Weinke.
The Hokies trailed by 21 points in the second quarter. Still, that didn’t stop them from a comeback attempt as Virginia Tech went to work in the second half. In the third quarter, Anthony Midget intercepted a Florida State pass, which set up a six yard touchdown run by Andre Kendrick, giving the Hokies a 29-28 lead.
It still wasn’t enough for the Hokies as the Seminoles racked up points in the fourth quarter. Chris Weinke hit Peter Warrick for a 44-yard touchdown to seal the deal for the Seminoles. Warrick was named MVP.
Florida State went on to win their second BCS National Championship 46-29.
