WDBJ7 Archive: UVA ends Virginia Tech’s 15-game winning streak in 2019 Commonwealth Clash
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WDBJ) - Virginia Tech’s 15-game winning streak against UVA began in 2004 and was the longest streak in rivalry history between the two teams.
UVA was looking to end the streak in 2019.
The Cavaliers hosted the Hokies on Senior Night, as fourteen seniors were honored before the game, including UVA quarterback Bryce Perkins. Perkins was looking to make a statement after the Cavaliers lost to the Hokies in a thriller the previous year.
In the first half, Perkins weaved his way between defenders on the Cavaliers’ opening drive for the 39-yard touchdown. The speedy quarterback continued to attack in the running game with a 67-yard touchdown, putting the Cavaliers up 13-6 at halftime.
But the Hokies were not going away. Virginia Tech quarterback Hendon Hooker scored a 34-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 13.
Near the end of the third quarter, the game was tied at 20, and Hooker threw a deep pass to Tre Turner for a 61-yard touchdown, putting the Hokies up 27-20.
The Cavaliers responded with a touchdown run by Wayne Taulapapam to tie the game at 27 in the fourth quarter.
After both teams traded field goals to tie the game at 30, Hooker threw an interception to Noah Taylor. The Cavaliers capitalized on the turnover, with Brian Delaney hitting a 48-yard field goal, putting the Cavaliers up 33-30.
The Hokies needed to run the two-minute drill to save the streak, but Hooker fumbled the football after being swallowed up by Mandy Alonso. Eli Hanback recovered the football for a touchdown, sealing the deal for the Cavaliers.
The Cavaliers held on to beat the Hokies 39-30 for the Commonwealth Cup.
