Amaka Agugua-Hamilton out as Virginia women’s basketball head coach
The surprise announcement comes just days after leading the Cavaliers to the Sweet 16
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WDBJ) - A Saturday shakeup in women’s college basketball has the Virginia Cavaliers looking for a new women’s basketball head coach.
In a short statement, the school announced Amaka Agugua-Hamilton will not return as head coach. The move comes just one week after “Coach Mox” led the Cavaliers from the First Four to the Sweet 16 - the Cavaliers first appearance in the round of 16 since 2000.
The terse statement offered no explanation for the move, but said the national search for her replacement will begin immediately.
Agugua-Hamilton went 70-58 in four seasons at UVA, including a 29-42 mark in ACC games.
Virginia hired Agugua-Hamilton in March 2022 to replace Tina Thompson. Coach Mox’s hiring followed an impressive three-year stint at Missouri State. She led that school to two NCAA Tournament appearances, including the 2021 Sweet 16.
