RICHMOND, Va. (WDBJ) - Virginia residents can fish without a license June 5-7 during the state’s free fishing days.

The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources will waive fishing license requirements for recreational rod and reel fishing in both fresh and saltwater during the three-day period. DWR access permits will also not be required.

The agency is hosting several free events during the weekend.

Staff and volunteers will provide rods, reels, tackle and bait at several locations, including Carvins Cove Reservoir in Roanoke from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 6.

No registration is required for the events.

All fishing regulations including size, season, catch limits and gear restrictions remain in effect. DWR fee fishing areas still require a fee during the free fishing weekend.

DWR is also accepting entries for the 2026 Kids ‘n Fishing Photo Contest.
