SALEM, Va. (WDBJ) - More than a dozen veterans are taking advantage of a local resource in Salem, Virginia! Adult Care Center of Roanoke Valley says they are proud to serve those who served our country. “I’m getting goose bumps just talking about it,” said Executive Director Mike Grepiotis. “These veterans are not looking for praise or recognition. In fact, they comment it was their civil duty and that they would do it all again proudly again if they could.”

Adult Care Center of Roanoke Valley is a daytime care program available to, not just veterans, but any dependent adult whose unable to remain at home unsupervised. The facility offers personalized care plans, medication management, activities, personal care, meals, and much more.

Grepiotis says, ACCRV was the first adult medical day care in Virginia. “We allow families to drop their loved ones off continuing working if they want, or participating in their civic clubs, their hobbies...at the end of the day they go home together and there’s not a premature placement and a level of care that’s not necessary at this time.”

Guy Byrd is the Director of Philanthropy and has been at ACCRV for 7 years. To him, it’s more than a job, he believes in laboring for those who can’t. He says he can relate to the participants in many ways. “Socialization is a big part of what we do here. Sometimes when they’re not here they may be alone a lot and that’s not a good thing,” said Byrd with tears in his eyes.

By late afternoon, the building will close because it’s not a shelter for the night, it’s a bridge to tomorrow. And their tomorrow means a place where they have structure and people know their name. It’s their happy place.
