Kids Soar after-school literacy program helps Roanoke children build reading skills
Nonprofit works to break cycle of poverty through education and service
ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - As students across the region head back to school, a Roanoke nonprofit is working to extend learning beyond the classroom through a literacy-focused after-school program for children in kindergarten through fifth grade.
Kids Soar is dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty through education and service. The organization’s Literacy After-School Program provides children with consistent reading support outside of the school day while also offering a safe and structured environment for working families.
What the program offers
The program uses the research-based KidzLIT curriculum and includes tutoring, homework assistance, reading activities, and enrichment opportunities. Students also receive snacks and dinner and have access to the organization’s Clothes Closet.
Kids Soar said the program is designed to support the whole child — addressing both academic needs and access to basic resources.
Focus on reading skills and confidence
Program leaders said the goal is to help children grow in reading skills and confidence while giving them the tools they need to succeed in school and in life. The organization said it also aims to help children discover a love of reading and believe in their own abilities.
Kids Soar serves families in the Roanoke area and continues to expand its reach as the new school year begins.
