ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - A very special request comes to us from a caretaker, Thomas Brown, who promised his WWII hero he would keep his legacy alive.

Thomas agreed to “tell his story to ensure he was not forgotten as he was the last of his family.”

Today he is honoring the life of Kenneth C. Emanuel.

Emanuel stood watch during patrols in the Pacific by spotting and opening fire on small boats attempting to attach explosives to his and other ships.

Emanuel showed great heroics in relaying morse code light messages during an attack at sea from enemy aircraft.

After the military, he worked as a nighttime security guard at a mining operation in Florida.

Thomas Brown, the caretaker, says he is not related to Emanuel but cared for him for over five years after the death of his wife.

He was an amazing man!

If you’d like to honor someone who served, submit their photo and information to WDBJ7.com.

Tune in next Tuesday for another hometown veteran.
