Greater Roanoke Workforce Development Board ramps up hiring events
Businesses can set up tables at career centers ahead of September expo
ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - The Greater Roanoke Workforce Development Board has planned a number of hiring events as hiring needs increase among regional businesses.
In addition to posting jobs on the Workforce Connection, businesses can set up hiring tables at Virginia Career Works Centers in the region, which function similarly to job fairs but host one business at a time.
Businesses scheduled at Roanoke center
Several businesses have tables scheduled at the Roanoke Center on Jefferson Street starting at the end of this week.
The United States Postal Service will come weekly on Fridays starting August 28 to talk with people about carrier associate and assistant positions.
On September 2, ServiceMaster will look for candidates for positions related to cleaning up after accidents and disasters, including water removal.
On September 3, Crothall Healthcare will talk with people about housekeeping positions within facilities of Carilion Clinic. The company has a large number of vacancies to fill.
On September 15, Masis Staffing will be at The Franklin Center in Rocky Mount with many different types of positions to fill. The company is a staffing firm representing a number of businesses.
No appointments are necessary for these hiring tables. Job seekers can bring a resume, and some businesses may interview on the spot.
Career Expo set for September 10
The third annual Career Expo will take place at the Berglund Center Special Events Hall on September 10 from 4 to 7 p.m. As of now, 44 businesses are registered to talk with job seekers, representing a variety of industries. That number is growing daily.
In addition to employer booths, a professional photographer will be available to take complimentary headshots for attendees to use for LinkedIn profiles, business cards and other needs.
Registration for the Career Expo is not required. It is a walk-in event.
Toni McLawhorn with the Greater Roanoke Workforce Development Board said, “We hope the public will take advantage of this opportunity to speak in person with employers, as we often hear from them that it’s difficult to get that one-on-one engagement with a person – most everything is online these days.”
She recommends people prepare in advance by getting help on their resume and planning a professional-looking outfit, especially if they want a headshot taken. Virginia Career Works Centers are open daily to provide resume assistance.
A few stations will be open at the Berglund Center on September 10 to help people with last-minute resume revisions and to print a small number of resumes on site. That assistance will begin at 3 p.m. in the lobby of the Special Events Hall.
