CRAIG COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) - A man charged with sex crimes involving a minor appeared in a Craig County courtroom Friday morning.

Matthew Wilson, 34, is facing several charges, including production and possession of child pornography.

Wilson was arrested in December. At the time, Craig County Public Schools issued a statement saying someone “associated” with the district had been charged. WDBJ7 learned Friday, that person is Wilson.

Wilson’s connection to the schools is limited. His only involvement was through his job as a mechanical contractor, occasionally being on school grounds.

Prosecutors say Wilson recorded and kept an explicit video of a girl. The defense said filming was accidental and that Wilson didn’t intend for his camera to capture the child.

Wilson’s attorney asked for bail, highlighting his lack of a criminal record. The judge ultimately granted bail, but forbade Wilson from being in contact with children.

It’s unclear when Wilson will be back in court.

Prosecutors say they want to spare the child involved from testifying in court, citing potential trauma.

WDBJ7 is withholding alleged details about the case because it involves a child.
