HALIFAX COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) - A 100-year-old woman is preserving African American history through her quilts and now has a new book out.

Halifax County native Edith Edmunds stitches patterns in her quilts that represent codes slaves used to navigate the Underground Railroad.

She is releasing a new book called “Sacred Stitches”, which reveals the hidden messages behind the slave codes. It is the sequel to her first book, “Secret Stitches”.

Her quilts will also be on display through February at the Nine Eighteen Nine Studio Gallery in Charlotte.

“I just get so excited to know that the patterns that I have made, given away, or sold, are being displayed,” said Edith Edmunds, Halifax County resident.

Her book ‘Sacred Stitches’ can be purchased here and will be out on all other platforms soon.
