Hometown Eats: Peace of Pie Pizzeria
Peace of Pie Pizzeria is located at 534 Main St, Altavista, VA 24517
ALTAVISTA, Va. (WDBJ) - We could all use a little more peace in the world, especially when the peace comes in the form of a piece of pizza.
It’s all about the double meanings and in some cases double flavor at Peace of Pie Pizzeria in Altavista for this week’s Hometown Eats!
“Just really good pizza made the hard way,” said owner Breezy Peterson.
“Once you try it one time, you will come back,” added Altavista Police Chief Tommy Merricks.
Like prepare to take a trip back to the age of peace and love and lots of pizza. Welcome to Peace of Pie Pizzeria on Main Street in Altavista.
“No other place around here makes good pizza like this,” said regular customer Vivian Farmer.
“We do everything from scratch,” said Peterson.
Breezy and her husband Lucas became the owners of this flower power pizzeria in 2022, but this bud first took root in 2012 by Donna Hendrix.
“She’s a true blue dyed in the wool hippie. This is her heart and soul here and we’re just privileged to keep it on for her,” said Breezy.
The décor around the place is like a time machine for customers.
“It’s back in my days. I like it, I love it, it brings back old memories,” said regular Henry Morgan.
“Her philosophy was love food, love people. For us as Christians it’s love God, love people, so it kind of all mixes together and just agrees with how we see the world and how we live our life,” added Breezy.
Breezy is the social butterfly while Lucas, a veteran, taps into his military attention to detail ways in every pie he creates like the very popular, Kitchen Sink.
“Large size dough ball, it’s our most popular size that we make fresh daily. 160 pounds a day on average. This is called docking, you put holes in it so it doesn’t puff up real bad in the oven. Larges get two scoops of sauce, sauce is homemade. You’re looking for consistency of cheese distribution, pepperoni, ham, sausage, hamburger, mushrooms, onions, green peppers, bacon and black olives. Cheese on the bottom and on the top. The oven is a five-minute cook at about 500 degrees. Our Kitchen Sink is a fine line between too much and too little, it takes a fair amount of practice to get it right,” explained Lucas.
“The Kitchen Sink,” said Merricks.
“For me, it’s the Kitchen Sink,” added Farmer.
“I think if I took my scale out and put a Kitchen Sink on it, it would be somewhere near five or six pounds. It’s a big ole pizza,” joked Breezy.
I’m told you can’t come to Peace of Pie without an order of the cheese sticks which looks like a cheese pizza but looks can be deceiving.
“Most people are kind of confused about our cheese sticks but they’re flat like our pizza and they’re cut into strips so I can’t tell you how many cheese sticks come in an order. They’re just sold by size,” said Breezy.
And don’t dare forget the homemade ranch dressing. It has a cult following.
“Want to fill a hot tub with it, want to use it as body wash, drink it like a milk shake, we’re not going to judge people for what they do with their ranch. We only sell it in 2oz cups,” said Breezy.
“I have been made by my wife to come back down and get more ranch because she didn’t think we had enough so yea, it’s good,” joked Merricks.
“You can’t go wrong with anything you get in here, I’m going to go ahead and tell you,” said Morgan.
“Our sandwiches are nice and fresh, we do those in the oven as well,” added Breezy. “We’re also known for our wings, they’re oven baked and take a little longer but they’re better that way.”
Being in a small town, the Petersons know people come to their pizzeria for more than just food.
“We want people to come here and just feel like we know them and that we care about them and that we’re going to take care of them because that’s what hospitality should be,” said Breezy.
But it certainly doesn’t hurt that people love the food.
“They put their heart into this pizza, it’s really good. You’re going to taste it and you’re going to come back no matter where you are,” said Farmer.
