ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - Roanoke is getting national recognition as a must-visit destination in 2026. CNN ranked the Star City the 10th best town in America to visit, pointing to the city’s easy access to outdoor recreation in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

“It’s been a lot of years of work—people investing in our outdoor infrastructure and our trails,” said Roanoke Vice- Mayor Terry McGuire. “It didn’t happen overnight, but it’s exciting to be recognized.”

City leaders and trail advocates say Roanoke’s growing network of trails—paired with a revitalized downtown—has helped draw visitors from across the country.

“The city, the people… y’all have a lot going on out here,” said one visitor. “So yeah—I love it. I love this city.”

Beyond the views and outdoor access, Roanoke’s expanding food scene and local businesses are also a point of pride for residents.

“Whether it’s entrepreneurs opening restaurants, non-profits, food trucks—any type of business—people across the region take a lot of pride in what they do,” Founder of 5 Point Music Sanctuary Tyler Godsey said.

Roanoke has also been recognized for community leadership. The city recently received its ninth All-America City Award from the National Civic League, an honor highlighting communities that bring people together to address local challenges.
