This Day in History: Pony Express mail rides began

(WDBJ) - April 3, 1860:

The first Pony Express mail delivery rides began.

The early mail men of their traveled by horse and rider relay teams.

It was the most effective way to communicate cross-country until the telegraph expanded.

The system closed in October 1861 after 18 months.
